It is a general term for films made by the proletariat for the proletariat, and its origins lie in a conversation in 1918 between Lenin and AV Lunacharsky, the first People's Commissar of Education, in which he said, "For us, the most important thing is cinema." In other words, after the October Revolution (1917), it became clear that in the hands of the capitalist class, film becomes a "means of propaganda for bourgeois ideology" and "opium for the masses," but in the hands of the working class, it becomes a "weapon for the liberation of the people." This led to the formation of the history of Soviet cinema (see the "Soviet cinema" entry for details).

プロレタリア階級の手によってつくられるプロレタリア階級のための映画の総称で，1918年にレーニンが初代教育人民委員A.V.ルナチャルスキーとの対話のなかで〈われわれにとってもっとも重要なものは映画である〉といったことがその出発点となった。すなわち，映画は資本家階級の手に握られた場合は〈ブルジョア的思想の宣伝手段〉となり〈大衆への阿片〉となるが，労働者階級の手のなかでは〈人民解放のための武器〉となるということが十月革命(1917)以後はっきりと認識されて，ソビエト映画の歴史が形成されていくことになるのである(詳しくは〈ソビエト映画〉の項目を参照)。
