…After the July Revolution, when political satire was banned, caricatures of manners and customs became popular, and Dore's name is hard to miss in illustrations of classical literature. In England, Cruikshank, C. Keane, G. du Maurier, and Richard Doyle (1824-83), in Germany, W. Busch, and in Switzerland, R. Tofer, were active in the first and middle years of the century with their depictions of manners and customs and nonsensical humor. Furthermore, at the end of the century, there were many talented painters such as Steinlen, Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931), Caran d'Ache (1859-1909), Herman Paul, C. Leandre, and A. Robida in France, Olaf Gulbransson (1873-1958), Thomas Theodor Heine (1867-1948), Bruno Paul (1874-1968), and Coubin in Germany, and Rops and Ensor in Belgium.
