A family of smugglers in the late Edo period. Born in Iwami Province (Shimane Prefecture). His family served the Hamada Domain's shipping company. When his father, Kiyosuke, was shipwrecked in the Kishu Nada Sea (he later survived), Yaemon, under the influence of Watanabe Kazan, plotted smuggling with Takeshima (Ulleung Island) in order to compensate for the damages to the domain. From the first year of the Tenpo era (around 1830), he carried out smuggling with the tacit approval of the domain, and even extended his reach to trade with Nanban, contributing greatly to the domain's finances. However, following an investigation by Mamiya Rinzo, he was arrested by the Osaka Town Magistrate in 1830, and this large-scale smuggling was discovered (the Takeshima Incident). Two elders committed seppuku, and dozens of others were punished, with Yaemon being sentenced to death along with the accountant Hashimoto Sanemon. 江戸後期の密貿易家。岩見国(島根県)生まれ。家は浜田藩の廻船御用を務めていた。父清助が紀州灘で遭難(のち生還),藩に対する損害の弁済目的で,八右衛門は渡辺崋山の影響を受け竹島(鬱陵島)との密貿易を企て,天保初年(1830年頃)より,藩黙認のもと,密貿易を実施,さらに南蛮貿易にまで手を伸ばし大いに藩財政に貢献した。しかし,間宮林蔵の探索で,同7年に大坂町奉行に逮捕され,この大規模な密貿易が発覚した(竹島事件)。家老ら2人の切腹をはじめ数十人が処罰され,八右衛門は勘定方橋本三右衛門と共に死罪となった。これを機に,幕府は「異国渡海禁制」の触れ書きを全国に発した。<参考文献>山脇悌二郎『抜荷』
