Japanese: モジゴケ - もじごけ

A crustacean lichen of the Graphaceae family that grows mainly on tree bark. Its symbiotic algae are from the green algae genus Viola. The odonta is elongated and slightly branched, giving it an appearance resembling writing. It has a black pericarp, and the spores are colorless, multilocular, and have horizontal septa. There are grooves along both sides of the pericarp, and seven species are found in Japan, including G. proserpens Vain., which is widely distributed throughout the country. [Kashiwatani Hiroyuki]
