Black fugitive slaves in the New World colonies. In English, they are called maroons. Cimarrons appeared soon after the conquest of the Indies, but became active with the expansion of the Atlantic slave trade in the 17th century. Their centers were the Caribbean, where slave labor was concentrated on plantations, the coastal areas of Colombia, Venezuela, and Central America, and the coastal areas and tropical interior of Brazil. Cimarrons who were taken back were severely punished, but there were also cases where their societies (palenques, quilombos), which were formed in tropical jungles, continued until the abolition of slavery.
