...The aircraft they made, imitating birds, were what we now call hang gliders, with people hanging from them. They gradually improved them from 1962, and finally made them capable of gliding several hundred meters up a slope from a hill about 50 meters high. After O. Lilienthal died in a crash (1896), several successors continued to improve gliders. One of them, American railroad engineer Octave Chanute (1832-1910), built a biplane glider and succeeded in more than 1,000 glides, as well as publishing a book on flying machines. Among the many letters of inquiry sent to him was one from Wilbur, the elder brother of the Wright brothers. The Wright brothers, under Chanute's tutelage, conducted their own gliding experiments, and then succeeded in the first flight of an airplane on December 17, 1903. ...
