Jean Guéhenno

French author. Born into a poor shoemaker's family, he studied hard to complete his studies and devoted himself to training as a writer. After World War I, he continued to work as a teacher while writing many works, and from 1929 to 1936 he served as editor-in-chief of the magazine Europe , which was published with the support of Romain Rolland. In 1942 during World War II, he helped to establish the National Committee of Writers, an organization of the anti-German resistance, and his range of activities was wide. One of his representative works is Journal d'un homme de quarante ans (Diary of a Forty Man) (1934), written from the perspective of class struggle. He consistently advocated romantic social reformism, which values ​​emotion over theory, and humanitarian socialism. His other works include Journal d'une révolution (Journal of a Revolution) (1939), a record of his time at the Popular Front, and Journal des années noires (Diary of the Dark Ages) (1947), a record of his time at the Resistance. He has been a member of the Academie Française since 1962.

フランスの作家。貧しい靴屋の子として生まれ、苦学しながら学業を修得し、作家修業に励んだ。第一次世界大戦後、教員生活を続けながら多くの作品を書き、また1929年から36年まで、ロマン・ロランの援助のもとに刊行された雑誌『ウーロップ』Europeの編集長を務めたりした。第二次世界大戦中の42年、対独レジスタンスの組織「作家全国委員会」の創設に協力するなど、その活動の範囲は広い。代表作に「階級闘争」の観点から書かれた『四十男の日記』Journal d'un homme de quarante ans（1934）がある。理論よりも心情を重んずるロマンチックな社会改良主義、人道主義的社会主義の立場を貫く。ほかに人民戦線時代の記録『ある革命の日誌』Journal d'une révolution（1939。邦訳『ある革命の証言』）、レジスタンス期の記録『暗黒時代の日記』Journal des années noires（1947）など。1962年よりアカデミー・フランセーズ会員。
