Fuji fern - Fuji fern

Japanese: フジシダ - ふじしだ

An evergreen perennial fern of the Acanthaceae family, endemic to Japan, found somewhat rarely in deep mountains west of the Kanto region, preferring cool, humid locations in summer. The leaf axis grows like a vine, with buds at the tip, and it often grows in colonies on rocky areas under forests. The rhizome is short, ascends obliquely, and the leaves grow in clusters. The leaves are dark green to whitish green, 30-60 cm long including the petiole, 2-3 cm wide, and mostly hairless, although there are dusty hairs near the base of the petiole. The pinnae are thin and sessile, with an earlobe at the front of the base.

関東以西の深山にややまれに生じ，夏季に涼しく空中湿度の高い場所を好む，日本特産のコバノイシカグマ科の常緑多年生シダ植物。葉の中軸がつる状にのびて先端部に芽を生じ，林下の岩石地にしばしば群落をつくる。根茎は短く，斜上し，葉を叢生（そうせい）する。葉は深緑色から白緑色，葉柄を含めて長さ30～60cm，幅2～3cm，ほとんど無毛だが，葉柄の基部付近には，ほこりのような毛がある。羽片は細く，無柄，基部前側には耳垂がある。
