The original word is unclear, but it is generally thought to be the Sanskrit kulika. In the ancient Indian epic poem, the Mahabharata, Kulika is one of the eight great dragon kings, and is said to have a dark brown body. In esoteric Buddhist scriptures, it is interpreted as a black dragon and is called the Kurikara dragon (king). A form of an upright sword with a black dragon wrapped around it is widely used as the sama-yagyou form (a form shown by the possessions, etc.) of Acala. Images such as the Kurikara crest are all derived from the fact that they are modeled after the shape of a black dragon. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
