An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Saturniidae (illustration). A large moth with a wingspan of 10-12cm. The top of the forewings is convex, and there is a black marking bordered by a white line on the upper edge, and both the forewings and hindwings have a crescent-shaped white marking in the center of the wing, and the inside is black, and the outside is white and red horizontal lines. The larvae are about 5cm long, thick, pale blue-green covered with white powder, and have a series of fleshy projections on their backs. They attach to many trees, including Shinju, Igaki, Amur amber, Amur cork, Quercus acutissima, Japanese snowbell, and camphor. 鱗翅目ヤママユガ科の昆虫(イラスト)。翅の開張10~12cmの大型ガ類。前翅の翅頂部は出っ張り,上辺を白線で縁取られた黒紋があり,前・後翅とも翅の中央部に三日月形の白紋と,内側が黒く外側が白色と紅色の横線がある。幼虫は体長約5cm,体は太く,白粉に覆われた淡青緑色,背面に肉質突起を連ねる。シンジュ,ニガキ,キハダ,クヌギ,エゴノキ,クスノキなど多くの樹木につく。老熟すると食樹の葉を縦に長く巻いて褐色の繭をつくって蛹化(ようか)する。
