...For this reason, their opponents, the Slavophiles, called them Zapadniki, or Westernists. The majority of this group were intellectuals belonging to the aristocratic landowning class, and representative figures include the thinker Chaadaev, the writers Turgenev, Annenkov, Panaev, Goncharov, Druzhinin Aleksandr V. Druzhinin (1824-64), N. Nekrasov, the historians Timofei N. Granovskii (1813-55), S. Solovyov, the legal historians Konstantin D. Kavelin (1818-85), Boris N. Chicherin (1828-1904), the economists Ivan V. Vernadskii (1821-84), and Ivan K. Babst (1823-81). Others included a small number of writers and critics from the merchant class, such as Vasilii P. Botkin (1812-69), the radical thinker Belinsky from the lower classes, and aristocrats such as Herzen and Ogarov who continued the revolutionary tradition of the Decembrists.
