A painting term. A painting technique from ancient Greece and Rome. Wax painting, encaustic painting. Using a heated copper or silver palette, pigments are dissolved in beeswax mixed with a small amount of resin, and painted onto a wooden board or marble. After painting is complete, the surface is melted using the radiant heat of a branding iron, forming a smooth surface layer to fix the paint. This technique was forgotten in the Middle Ages, but was revived in the 17th century. A well-known example is the portraits of the Faiyum in Egypt.
