…British African explorer. He is a typical explorer of Britain's relationship with Africa during the post-Industrial Revolution era under Queen Victoria. Born into a poor working family in Scotland, on the periphery of Britain (cotton mill workers, the offspring of the Industrial Revolution), he became a medical missionary under the influence of his hardworking and devout Christian parents. He initially aspired to go to China, but gave up due to the Opium Wars, and was assigned to South Africa from 1841 to 1849 as a medical missionary sent by the London Missionary Society. …
