Sac spider (English spelling)

Japanese: フクログモ(袋蜘蛛) - フクログモ（英語表記）sac spider

A general term for spiders belonging to the genus Clubiona and the family Clubionidae in the order Araneae. They are found widely around the world, with body lengths ranging from 5 to 20 mm. They do not spin webs, but instead wander around at night on the ground, among grass, or on tree branches and leaves, preying on small insects. Many species make birth chambers by folding leaves together and protect their egg sacs inside, but some species make birth chambers under tree bark, fallen logs, stones, etc. They make homes out of silk under the bark or in the leaves of fallen trees, and spend the winter there. Spiders in this genus are one of the most difficult groups to identify, as many species are similar in shape and color. There are over 700 species known worldwide, and about 50 species known in Japan, including the yellow club spider and the red club spider.

クモ目フクログモ科フクログモ属Clubionaに属する蛛形（ちゆけい）類の総称。世界中に広く分布しており，体長は5～20mm。網を張らずに地上や草間，樹枝葉上を夜間歩き回り，小昆虫を捕食する。多くの種が葉をつづって産室をつくり，中にこもって卵囊を保護するが，樹皮，倒木，石などの下に産室をつくる種類もいる。樹皮下や落葉中に糸で住居をつくり，その中で越冬する。本属のクモは，形，色彩ともに似た種類が多く，同定の困難なグループの一つであり，世界で700種あまり，日本でハマキフクログモ，ムナアカフクログモなど約50種が知られている。
