[1] 〘名〙① 老人を尊敬し、その高齢を祝うために、招いて催す宴。酒を飲み詩歌をつくり音楽などを奏して楽しむ。七叟(しちそう)といって主人をいれて七人の老人が集まるのを常とし、上座から年長の順にすわり、それ以外の相伴(しょうばん)の客である垣下(えんが)は別座につらなった。もと中国の風習で、八四五年に唐の白居易が履道坊で催したのが最初で、日本では貞観一九年(八七七)三月、大納言南淵年名が小野山荘で催したのが最初。しょうしえ。※菅家文草(900頃)二「暮春、見二南亜相山荘尚歯会一」 〔古今著聞集(1254)〕 〔白居易‐九老図詩序〕② 高齢者を祝う会。また、老人を集めて慰安する会。敬老会。※狂歌・蜀山百首(1818)雑「つる九百九十九ねんめ亀九千九百九十九ああ尚歯会」[2] 江戸後期、洋学者を中心に新知識交換のためにできた結社の名。紀州藩儒遠藤勝助が主宰。渡辺崋山・高野長英、幕臣江川英龍・川路聖謨らが集まり、社会事業や海防・国際上の問題を研究したが、天保一〇年(一八三九)「蛮社の獄」で壊滅させられた。
