...These serials, especially Feuillade's works, are enlivened by the "fragments of life" shot entirely on location, and Iijima Tadashi points out in his book Avant-garde Film Theory and Avant-garde Art (1970) how important it is in film history that these serials maintained the vitality of realism that was lacking in "Films d'Art," which was shot on stage sets.

While American films tended to develop as an "entertainment industry," the distinctive feature of French films, which aimed to be purely "artistic," became clear in the 1920s after World War I, as symbolized by director Abel Gance's famous manifesto that "the age of the image has arrived." The film art school, which considered film to be a "new form of artistic expression" and sought to create poetry and music through images by "rejecting all formalism and uniformity," came to dominate. The filmmakers whom René Jeanne called the "French School" and Georges Sadoul named "French Impressionists" created an era.
