Takashima Coalfield - Takashima Electric Power

Japanese: 高島炭田 - たかしまたんでん
Takashima Coalfield - Takashima Electric Power
A coalfield exposed southwest of Nagasaki City on Koyagijima, Iojima, Okinoshima, Takashima, and Hashima. Most of it is distributed on the seabed, and it borders the Matsushima coalfield to the north. The coal-bearing seams are older than those in the Matsushima coalfield, and are part of the Paleogene Takashima Group, which is roughly the same age as the main coal-bearing seams in the Miike coalfield. There are 5 to 8 coal layers, 1 to 5 meters thick, and the coal is a caking bituminous coal with low sulfur and ash content. The reserves are approximately 600 million tons. [Ohashi Shusaku]
[Takashima Coal Mine]
A coal mine located in Takashima Town, Nishisonogi County, Nagasaki Prefecture. Coal from Takashima is said to have been mined since the Genroku era (1688-1704), but it came under direct management of the Saga Domain from the end of the Bunka era (1804-1818).
