Owl Nebula

A planetary nebula in Ursa Major. It is located near the star Beta at the bottom of the Big Dipper. The nebula is round with a dark eye-like area inside, which looks like the face of an owl, so it was named the Owl Nebula by the British astronomer Parsons. It is large for a planetary nebula, but it is quite faint, so you will need a slightly larger telescope to see it. Its catalog number is M97 or NGC3587. It is about 1,800 light years away. Its apparent magnitude is 10th and its apparent diameter is about 3 arc minutes. There is also the extraterrestrial galaxy M108 nearby. It can be seen in the northeastern sky around 7pm in mid-April, and near the zenith around 9pm.

おおぐま座にある惑星状星雲。北斗七星の柄杓(ひしゃく)の底のβ(ベータ)星の近くにある。星雲は全体が丸く、その中に少し暗い目のような部分があり、いかにもフクロウの顔のように見えるので、イギリスの天文学者パーソンズにより、ふくろう星雲と命名された。惑星状星雲としては大きいほうであるが、かなり淡いので少し大きめの望遠鏡で見る必要がある。カタログ番号はM97またはNGC3587。距離は約1800光年。実視等級は10等、視直径は3分程度。近くに系外銀河のM108もある。4月中旬の午後7時ころに北東の空に、午後9時ころに天頂付近に見える。
