Germ-free animals are animals in which fetuses are removed by Caesarean section and hysterectomy, and are raised in a closed, aseptic manner so that they have no detectable microorganisms. Gnotobiotes are animals in which clearly identified microorganisms have been colonized in germ-free animals.
