...This is the original tune of the current Shinano Oiwake. It was introduced to Echigo and became Echigo Oiwake, and then it moved north along the Japan Sea coast, giving birth to various Oiwake styles such as Sakata Oiwake (Yamagata Prefecture) and Honjo Oiwake (Akita Prefecture), and finally became Matsumae Oiwake and Esashi Oiwake around the Tenpo era (1830-44) when it was established in Hokkaido. One theory is that around the Tenmei era (1781-89), a Kengyo named Matsuzaki Kenryo, born in Niitsu, Echigo, traveled to Hokkaido and began singing Kenryo-bushi (Echigo Matsuzaka Kuzushi), which was then sung by Zatousanoichi from the south (Aomori, Iwate), and became the indirect source of Esashi Oiwake, but this is doubtful. *Some of the terminology explanations that refer to "Echigo Oiwake" are listed below.
