...The Hope (about 44 carats), purchased by Louis XIV in the 17th century, was a blue diamond known as a stone of bad luck. Many people who wore it were executed, such as Madame de Montespan and Marie Antoinette, and many people suffered unfortunate deaths and family misfortunes, such as the banker Hope family who bought it later. According to legend, it was cursed by a French diamond merchant, J.B. Tavernier (1605-89), who stole it from the eye of a statue of Ramashita in a temple in India around 1668.
