A type of metalwork. They appeared in the mid-8th century under the name of copperworkers, and belonged to the government-run workshops of the Todaiji Construction Office, the Kofukuji Kondo Construction Office, and the Bureau of Interior Craftsmen. With the decline of the Ritsuryo system, they left the government-run workshops and are thought to have lived in Shichijo, where metalworkers gathered, in Heian-kyo. From the late Heian period to the early Kamakura period, they greatly expanded their influence; for example, in 1186 (Bun'ei 2), copperworkers in Shichijo were accused of obstructing the Yura Manor in Kii Province (Azuma Kagami), which well illustrates this trend.
