A book of mysterious stories from the Six Dynasties period in China. It has 20 volumes. It was written by Eastern Jin Dynasty historian Gan Bao (lived around 317). He was a leading scholar and writer of his time, and wrote this book to prove that supernatural providence is not a lie. There were many similar books of mysterious stories written at the time, but "Soushenji" is one of the earliest, and is well written. It is a treasure trove of Chinese tales, and is highly regarded in the history of tales and literature for providing material for later novels, such as the legends of the Tang Dynasty. The original text has been lost, and the extant text was published during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1573-1619). There is also an eight-volume version, but the 20-volume version more closely resembles the original.
