A former town in Nishitonami County in western Toyama Prefecture. It occupies the Oyabe River basin and the southern part of the Hodatsu Hills. The main settlement is a town on the Hokuriku Kaido road, through which the Hokuriku Main Line passes. Sedge cultivation is practiced, and the town is known nationwide for its production of sugegasa (sedge hats). Carp farming is also practiced. 富山県西部,西砺波(にしとなみ)郡の旧町。小矢部(おやべ)川流域と宝達(ほうだつ)丘陵南部を占める。主集落は北陸街道の街村で,北陸本線が通じる。スゲ栽培が行われ,菅笠(すげがさ)の生産で全国に知られた。コイの養殖を行う。2005年11月高岡市へ編入。58.76km2。1万3754人(2003)。
