A former town in Nishitonami County in western Toyama Prefecture. It occupies the Oyabe River basin and the southern part of the Hodatsu Hills. The main settlement is a town on the Hokuriku Kaido road, through which the Hokuriku Main Line passes. Sedge cultivation is practiced, and the town is known nationwide for its production of sugegasa (sedge hats). Carp farming is also practiced. Incorporated into Takaoka City in November 2005. 58.76 ^km2 . Population: 13,754 (2003).
