A small, bioluminescent crustacean of the family Cyprinodontidae in the subclass of Ostracoda (Ostracoda), with a bivalve-shaped shell (illustration). It is about 3 mm long. Its body is completely covered on both sides by an egg-shaped, chitinous, milky-white carapace. The left and right shells are connected by adductor muscles and a hinge on the back, and there are deep slits on the front edge through which antennae emerge. It has compound eyes. It is dioecious. A luminous substance secreted from a gland in its upper lip is released into the seawater when stimulated, causing it to glow. It is abundant along the Pacific coast of Japan from summer to autumn.
