Morning Wife - Asazuma

Japanese:
Morning Wife - Asazuma
The name of a place in Sakata County, Omi Province, which has been a key point for land and water transportation since ancient times. It is located in present-day Maibara Town, Shiga Prefecture (now Maibara City), and faces Lake Biwa. It inherited the name of Asatsuma Town, Sakata County, as recorded in the Wamyō Ruijūshō, and in 950, the Asatsuma rule was set at 120 koku for boat fare to transport tributes and taxes from Mino Province (Tounan-in documents). In neighboring Chikuma, Chikuma Mikuriya was established as a place of rent for the Miyauchisho Zenshi, and niebito (people who offer offerings) provided them with soy-marinated crucian carp, sushi-marinated crucian carp, and seasoned salted crucian carp (Ruijū Sandai Kaku). During the Kamakura period, Asatsuma Manor was found as the territory of Kyoto Hosho-ji Temple, and the manor was divided into Hosho-ji and Jugo-jo districts and was ruled by them. The lord of Jugo was inherited from Kameyama-in to Shokeimon-in to Prince Sera to Rinsen-ji Temple in Kyoto, and it seems that no jito was appointed. Saigyo's "Yamaga-shu" includes a poem about the Asatsuma boat, but it is also known that Kiso Yoshinaka entered the area from the Hokuriku region, and Ichijo Kaneyoshi passed through the area. During the Sengoku period, Asatsuma Castle was built and became the site of a conflict between the Rokkaku and Azai clans, but under the rule of Oda Nobunaga, merchants were prohibited from passing by land and sea, and in 1573, when Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki rebelled, he ordered the construction of more than 10 large ships to transport his entire army across the sea from the area. Later, Nagahama Port was opened, and the area was forced into decline when the Hikone Domain built Maibara Port in 1603. During the Edo period, the area was known as Asatsuma Village under the same domain, until the end of the Edo period.
