A monk translator who traveled from India to China. His Sanskrit name was Amoghavajra, which translates to Amoghavajra. Amoghavajra is an abbreviation of Amoghavajra. He is said to have been a Brahmin from North India or originally from Ceylon (Sri Lanka). In 720, he arrived in the Tang Dynasty and assisted his teacher Vajrabodhi in translating Buddhist scriptures. In 741, he returned to South India and received the Sanskrit text from Longzhi, and also received the secret teachings of Shingon Buddhism. In 746, he returned to China and continued to translate Buddhist scriptures and preach until his death, becoming the teacher of three emperors: Xuanzong, Suzong (reigned 756-762), and Daizong (reigned 762-779). He translated 110 volumes and 143 volumes of esoteric Buddhist scriptures, including the "Vajrasekhara Sutra" (Shoe), and not only established the foundation of Chinese esoteric Buddhism, but also left an immortal legacy in the history of scripture translation as one of the four great translators.
