Japanese: ホモトピー - ほもとぴー（英語表記）homotopy

For two continuous maps f , f ': X → Y from a topological space X to a topological space Y , if there is a continuous map F : X × [0 , 1] → Y from the direct product X × [0, 1] of X and the closed interval [0, 1] to Y such that F ( x , 0) = f ( x ) and F ( x , 1) = f ' ( x ) for every point x in X, then f and f ' belong to the same homotopy class, or f and f ' are said to be homotopes (Figure). If f _t : X → Y (0≦ t ≦ 1) is defined as f _t ( x ) = F ( x , t ), then each f _t is a continuous map, and { f _t } changes continuously with respect to t .

位相空間Xから位相空間Yへの二つの連続写像f,f′：X→Yに対し，Xと閉区間[0,1]の直積X×[0,1]からYへの連続写像F：X×[0,1]→Yであって，Xのどの点xについてもF(x,0)＝f(x)，F(x,1)＝f′(x)となるものがとれるとき，fとf′は同じホモトピー類に属する，またはfとf′はホモトープであるという(図)。f_t：X→Y(0≦t≦1)をf_t(x)＝F(x,t)で定義すれば，各f_tは連続写像で，｛f_t｝はtに関して連続的に変わる。
