An arboreal lizard (illustration) of the Agamidae family of the reptile class. It is found in the Amami, Okinawa and Sakishima islands, and has local names such as Koshokuraya and Ataka. It is about 25cm long, with the tail taking up about 1/2 to 2/3 of that. It has a large, angular head, with a row of small yellow crest-like scales on the back of the head. Males do not have a pouch on their pharynx, but they spread out the yellow skin for displays during the breeding season. They move quickly in the trees, using their long, slender limbs and fingers to balance themselves, but are slow on the ground, running by hopping on their hind legs.
