A unique style of depiction of architecture used in Yamato-e paintings. Roofs and ceilings are removed, and sometimes even room partitions are omitted, to depict the interior from an overhead perspective. This allows a large space to be used to depict people and other interior features. It is believed to be a technique unique to Japan, and its earliest example can be found in the 1069 (Enkyu 1) "Eden Shoji-e of Prince Shotoku" (Tokyo National Museum), and has since been used extensively in various works, including picture scrolls.
