Joseph Simonius Assemani

1687‐1768
Maronite priest and pioneer of Oriental studies. Born in Tripoli, Syria, he graduated from the Maronite seminary in Rome. He worked at the Vatican Library and collected many manuscripts from the East. In 1736, he attended the Maronite Synod as a papal envoy and negotiated a union with the Church of Rome. His main work, the four volumes of the Oriental Library (1719-28), is a collection of Syriac documents. His nephew, Stephanus Evodius A. (1711-82), was also a famous Orientalist.

マロン派司祭，東洋学の開拓者。シリアのトリポリ出身，ローマのマロン派神学校を卒業。バチカン図書館につとめ，東方から多数の写本を集めた。1736年には教皇の使節としてマロン派主教会議に出席，ローマ教会との合同をとり決めさせた。主著《東方文庫》4巻(1719‐28)はシリア語文書の集成。甥で同姓のステファヌス･エウォディウス･アッセマニStephanus Evodius A.(1711‐82)も東洋学者として著名。
