1687‐1768 Maronite priest and pioneer of Oriental studies. Born in Tripoli, Syria, he graduated from the Maronite seminary in Rome. He worked at the Vatican Library and collected many manuscripts from the East. In 1736, he attended the Maronite Synod as a papal envoy and negotiated a union with the Church of Rome. His main work, the four volumes of the Oriental Library (1719-28), is a collection of Syriac documents. His nephew, Stephanus Evodius A. (1711-82), was also a famous Orientalist.
