Bukittinggi (English spelling)

A city on the Padang Highlands in the mid-west of Sumatra, Indonesia. It is located about 80 km north of Padang, at an altitude of 900 m, on the northern foot of the Merapi and Singgalang volcanoes. It has a population of 70,771 (1981). Despite being close to the equator, it has a comfortable climate with an average annual temperature of 21°C, making it a clean, European-style summer resort. In 1825, the Dutch built a fortress, Fort de Kock, here. The surrounding area is the center of Minangkabau settlement, and there is a railway line from Padang, and the national highway that crosses Sumatra also passes through here.

インドネシア、スマトラ島中西部のパダン高原にある都市。パダンの北約80キロメートル、メラピ、シンガラン両火山北麓(ほくろく)の標高900メートルに位置する。人口7万0771（1980）。赤道直下に近いにもかかわらず年平均気温は21℃と気候は快適で、清潔なヨーロッパ風の避暑地である。1825年、オランダはこの地に要塞(ようさい)フォート・デ・コックを築いた。付近はミナンカバウ人居住の中心地で、パダンから鉄道も通じ、スマトラ横断の国道もここを経由している。
