van Beneden (English spelling)

...A parasitic microorganism whose body is made up of a small number of cells. It was named by van Beneden (1876) as a group that is in the middle of the evolutionary process from protozoa to metazoa. However, some scholars currently believe that it is a degenerate form of the trematodes of flatworms due to parasitic life, that it is a degenerate form of the annelid worms due to the cilia covering its body and the position of its reproductive pores, and that it is a closely related animal to the coelenterates because it resembles the larvae of the coelenterates. However, the true phylogenetic relationship has not yet been clarified.
