A novel added by French author Bernardin de Saint-Pierre to the final volume of the 1787 edition of Studies of Nature. Paul and Virginie grew up in poverty but pure and happy conditions on the island of France (now Mauritius), free from the ill effects of society, and have been in love since childhood. Virginie becomes unhappy when she is called to France for an education by her rich and strict aunt. Two years later, on her return to the island, her ship is wrecked on the shore as Paul watches, and she dies, too, from grief. The idea that happiness can only be found in nature, and that humans only become unhappy in society, which pits nature against society, shows the strong influence of Rousseau. The descriptions of the nature and storms of a South Sea island were something that had not been seen in French literature up to that point, and it was a huge success when it was published, making it the only work by Bernardin de Saint-Pierre that has been read to this day.
