A town on the eastern edge of the Jezreel Plain, the most fertile area in Israel. It is 120 meters below sea level, and the summers are very hot. It flourished as a key point of north-south trade from ancient times, and was under Egyptian control throughout the second half of the 2nd millennium BC, but was conquered by David and became part of Israel. During the Hellenistic period, it was called Scythopolis (meaning "town of the Scythians"), as it was a garrison for the Scythian cavalry under the Ptolemaic dynasty. In 63 BC, it was conquered by the Roman Pompey and became one of the Decapolis (an alliance of 10 Greek cities). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
