Shoku Nihon Kouki - Shoku Nihon Kouki

This is an imperially commissioned history book following the Nihon Koki. It has 20 volumes and is the fourth of the Six National Histories. It covers the 18 years from Emperor Ninmyo's accession to the throne in 833 (Tencho 10) to his death and funeral in 850 (Kasho 3). In 855 (Saihō 2), by order of Emperor Montoku, five men - Fujiwara no Yoshifusa, Fujiwara no Yoshimi, Tomo no Yoshio, Haruzumi no Yoshitada, and Agata Inukai no Sadamori - edited it, and it was completed and presented in 869 (Jogan 11) during the reign of Emperor Seiwa. During this time, Yoshiakira died of an illness, Yoshio was exiled to Izu due to the Otenmon Incident, and Sadamori was appointed as the governor of Suruga Province and was appointed to his post, so Yoshifusa and Yoshinawa, who remained behind, reported the incident. Whereas previous national histories have dealt with the reigns of several or even several decades of emperors, this book is distinctive in that it covers the reign of Emperor Ninmyo alone, and the articles are detailed. Among the ancient manuscripts is a copy formerly owned by Takayanagi Mitsutoshi that was copied from a copy from 1136 (Hōen 2), of which two volumes, volumes 5 and 8, remain. In addition, there is a copy from the Sanjōnishi family lineage that was copied in the Muromachi period, but there are many errors, missing sentences, and omissions. Included in the Kokushi Taikei.
