...When an oceanic plate subducts under a continental plate, the basalt that made up the oceanic crust transforms into eclogite, which then partially melts to produce a large amount of calc-alkaline magma.

In addition to the intrusive type, which is thought to be magmatic, there is a hybrid type, which is thought to have been formed by regional metamorphism or granitization. There has been a long-standing debate about the source material of granite and how it is formed.
