French thinker. Born in Rouen. Nephew of the great tragic writer Pierre Corneille and his brother, the playwright Thomas Corneille. He wrote several plays under the influence of Thomas. He first came to prominence with Dialogues des morts (1683), which shows the beginnings of his later preaching for the spread of scientific thought in his elegant style. His two masterpieces are Entretiens sur la pluralité des mondes ( 1686) and Histoire des oracles (1687), which he subsequently presented to the world. In the former, he spoke of the truth of Copernicus in a sophisticated dialogue with a high-class lady of high society, while in the latter, he rejected miracles and advocated for the progress of science. In the so-called "New and Old Controversy," he sided with the modernists, and after being elected to the Academy of Sciences in 1697, he served as its secretary for life, playing a role as a bridge between the free thinkers (libertine) and the Encyclopedists (encyclopedists). He is also known for having lived an unusually long life.
