1903‐57 Hungarian-born mathematician. Born in Budapest and died in Washington. A teacher at gymnasium is said to have advised Neumann's father (a banker) that "Numann had an extraordinary talent for mathematics, so he should get a university professor to teach him." Perhaps because his father followed this advice, Neumann was recognized as a mathematician by the age of 19. He then held positions as a private lecturer at the University of Berlin and the University of Hamburg from 1927 to 1930. In 1930, he was invited to become a professor at Princeton University in the United States, and in 1933 he became a professor at the newly established Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton.
