Hungarian-born mathematician. Born in Budapest and died in Washington. A teacher at gymnasium is said to have advised Neumann's father (a banker) that "Numann had an extraordinary talent for mathematics, so he should get a university professor to teach him." Perhaps because his father followed this advice, Neumann was recognized as a mathematician by the age of 19. He then held positions as a private lecturer at the University of Berlin and the University of Hamburg from 1927 to 1930. In 1930, he was invited to become a professor at Princeton University in the United States, and in 1933 he became a professor at the newly established Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton.

ハンガリー生れの数学者。ブダペストに生まれワシントンに没す。ギムナジウムの先生が，〈ノイマンは数学に異常な才能をもっているから大学の教授に数学を教えてもらうように〉とノイマンの父(銀行家)に勧めたという。父がこの忠告に従ったためか，ノイマンは19歳のときには数学者として認められていたという。そして1927年から30年までベルリン大学やハンブルク大学の私講師の職についた。30年にはアメリカのプリンストン大学に教授として招かれ，33年には新設のプリンストン高級研究所教授となる。
