[Died] December 24, 2008. Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. American political scientist. Full name: Samuel Phillips Huntington. Received his bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1946, his master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1948, and his doctorate from Harvard University in 1951. He served as associate director of the Institute on War and Peace at Columbia University, a professor at Harvard University, and president of the American Political Science Association. His research areas ranged from comparative politics, foreign policy, and international relations to modernization policy, and he published a variety of research papers, including on the political role of the military and on developing countries. In his 1996 major work, The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order, he drew attention for emphasizing the rise of East Asia and the Islamic world, and arguing that the post-Cold War international community would be centered on a clash of civilizations rather than a clash of ideologies. His other major works include The Soldier and the State: the Theory and Politics of Civil-military Relations (1957) and Political Order in Changing Societies (1968).

[died] October 17, 1947. New Haven, Connecticut. American geographer. Lecturer at Euphrates University in Turkey (1897-1901), explored the Euphrates River Gorge (01). After traveling in Central Asia (03-06), he returned to the United States and taught at Yale University (07-17). As a researcher at the Carnegie Foundation (10-13), he investigated the relationship between climate and civilization in the United States, Mexico, and Central America. His books include Civilization and Climate (15) and Mainsprings of Civilization (45).

Died January 5, 1796 in Norwich, Connecticut. American lawyer and politician. One of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. A member of the Connecticut Provincial Assembly in 1765, he was elected a justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court in 1774. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress (1776-84), its Speaker (1779-81, 1783), and a member of the Connecticut Canon (1775-83). After independence was achieved, he returned to Connecticut and was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1784. He later served as Governor of Connecticut (1786-96).

A city in the western part of West Virginia, United States. It is located on the Ohio River near the border with Ohio and Kentucky. It was founded in 1871 when the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad was built. It produces coal, oil, and natural gas. In addition to railroad facilities, there are glass, nickel, electrical, cement, furniture, and food factories. The city is surrounded by levees because it has been flooded several times. It is home to Marshall University (founded in 1837), the oldest university in the state. Population: 54,844 (1990).

アメリカ合衆国,ウェストバージニア州西部の都市。オハイオ川沿岸,オハイオ,ケンタッキー両州との州境付近に位置する。 1871年チェサピーク・オハイオ鉄道が敷設されたときに設立。石炭,石油,天然ガスを産する。鉄道関係施設のほか,ガラス,ニッケル,電気,セメント,家具,食料品工場がある。数度洪水に襲われたので,町は堤防で囲まれている。州内最古のマーシャル大学 (1837創立) がある。人口5万 4844 (1990) 。
