Born: April 18, 1927, New York, New York [Died] December 24, 2008. Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. American political scientist. Full name: Samuel Phillips Huntington. Received his bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1946, his master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1948, and his doctorate from Harvard University in 1951. He served as associate director of the Institute on War and Peace at Columbia University, a professor at Harvard University, and president of the American Political Science Association. His research areas ranged from comparative politics, foreign policy, and international relations to modernization policy, and he published a variety of research papers, including on the political role of the military and on developing countries. In his 1996 major work, The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order, he drew attention for emphasizing the rise of East Asia and the Islamic world, and arguing that the post-Cold War international community would be centered on a clash of civilizations rather than a clash of ideologies. His other major works include The Soldier and the State: the Theory and Politics of Civil-military Relations (1957) and Political Order in Changing Societies (1968). Huntington |
