A machine that cuts and trims the grass is also called a lawn mower. For home use, there are hand-pushed mowers and mowers with small motors or engines. There are three types of mowers: (1) those with a cylindrical shape with evenly spaced cutting blades that rotate and cut the grass with a straight receiving blade, (2) those with various shapes of cutting blades that rotate horizontally at high speed, and (3) those with vertical cutting blades that rotate vertically at high speed and cut from bottom to top. To cut the grass short without damaging it, wheels or rollers that determine the cutting height are attached near the cutting blade. The cut grass is usually left to be collected later, but some mowers have a hopper (basket) that can store the grass as it is cut. For large areas such as golf courses, there are large machines for tractors and dedicated self-propelled lawn mowers. The mowing width of a single lawnmower is usually 40 centimeters or less for hand-pushed domestic lawnmowers and 1 meter or less for powered lawnmowers. For commercial lawnmowers, it is about 2 meters, but a wider mowing width means they cannot follow small bumps in the ground and the mowing height is not uniform, so to increase mowing efficiency, multiple lawnmowers are set on the front, back, left and right of the tractor.
