The central city of the Transylvania region in northwestern Romania. Its current official name is Cluj-Napoca. Its German name is Klausenburg, and its Hungarian name is Kolozsvár. It is the center of an agricultural region along the Someş River, and is home to leather, machinery, chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries. There are natural gas deposits in the vicinity. It is also known as a tourist destination. It has a university (founded in 1872), a medical school, an art school and an opera house. During the Roman Dacian period, it was called Napoca, and German immigrants settled there from the 12th century onwards, and it became a free city in 1405. During World War II it was part of Hungary, and even today there are many Hungarians. It has a population of 325,000 (2011).
