A wall made of overlapping boards for the purpose of protecting the wall surface and creating a decorative design is called a hame (siding), and the boards that are laid are called hameita (siding boards). Boards that are about 1 meter above the floor are called wainscoting, and those that are higher are called takahames. There are two types of laying: flat board laying and mirror board laying. The former refers to vertical boarding, where boards are nailed vertically to the furring strips that run across the studs, with a capping board at the top and a baseboard at the bottom, while the latter refers to horizontal boarding, where boards are laid directly on the studs in a row. In the latter case, in addition to the capping board and baseboard, vertical and horizontal battens, upper and lower stiles, and mirror boards are used. The laying method that creates a flat finish without steps on the surface is called board siding.
