...The city then rapidly declined due to the advance of the Hanseatic League (especially Rostock), the alliance with Denmark, and the great plague epidemics. After the great fire of 1624, King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway abandoned the old city (now Gamreviewen, southeast of Oslo) and decided to build a new city, Christiania (Kristiania), in the west. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it became a commercial center due to shipping and timber trade.
