A base of the Russian Empire located on the Pacific coast of North America. Russia, which took possession of the Aleut Islands and Alaska, established the Russian-American Company, a national policy corporation, in 1799, and began building a large base north of San Francisco in 1812, mainly for the purpose of catching fur seals. This expansion of Russia to the Pacific coast was one of the backgrounds to the Monroe Doctrine (1823). With the subsequent decline in the fur seal population, the base was sold to American settler J.A. Sutter in 1841. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
