...Also noteworthy are the works of Šenoa, who reconstructed Croatia's past in prose, influenced by Russian and French realism in the mid-19th century, Zmaj, the leading children's writer in Serbia, and Jurčić of Slovenia. At the end of the century, Laza Lazarević (1851-91) of Serbia, Vjenceslav Novak (1859-1905) of Matavli, Sremac, and Croatia, and others enjoyed depicting the daily life of the regions with a strong regional flavor. Throughout medieval history, the southern Slavic peoples of the Yugoslav region each had their own language, with Slovenian, Croatian, Serbian, and Macedonian coming to be spoken from the north. In the 19th century, the unification of Serbian and Croatian, which accounted for more than 70% of the total, as literary languages ​​was a major political event.
