Azerbaijani literary figure and enlightenment thinker. Born in Tabriz, he moved to the Trans-Caucasus at the age of 16-17. He settled in the Dagestan region and began writing in his late 40s. He wrote all of his works in Persian rather than his native Azerbaijani, and became one of the important bearers of Iran's "constitutional literature." His representative works include "Problems of Life" and "The Way of the Philanthropist," which introduce new European knowledge. [Yaoshi Makoto]

アゼルバイジャンの文学者，啓蒙思想家。タブリーズに生まれるが，16～17歳のとき，ザカフカスに移住。ダゲスタン地方に居を定め，40代後半から文筆活動に入る。作品はすべて母語のアゼルバイジャン語ではなくペルシア語を用いて著し，イランの〈立憲文学〉の重要な担い手の一人となる。代表作に，ヨーロッパの新しい知識を紹介する《人生の諸問題》や《慈善者の道》などがある。【八尾師誠】
