1834‐1911? Azerbaijani literary figure and enlightenment thinker. Born in Tabriz, he moved to the Trans-Caucasus at the age of 16-17. He settled in the Dagestan region and began writing in his late 40s. He wrote all of his works in Persian rather than his native Azerbaijani, and became one of the important bearers of Iran's "constitutional literature." His representative works include "Problems of Life" and "The Way of the Philanthropist," which introduce new European knowledge.
