The capital of the Republic of Chuvashia in the western part of the Russian Federation. Population 458,000 (1999). A port city on the right bank of the Volga River, it developed as the administrative, economic and cultural center of the Republic of Chuvashia. Its main industries are machinery (electrical machinery, tractor parts), textiles (cotton), wood and food industries. There are many cultural facilities, including a general university, an agricultural university, a pedagogical university, the Chapayev Museum, a local museum and various theaters. The origins of the city are unclear, but it appeared in records from 1371 and became a city in 1555. It developed after becoming the capital of the republic in 1925, and the opening of the railway in 1939 further promoted this development. It is the location of an airport.
