British social anthropologist. Along with Evans-Pritchard, he played a leading role in African studies in British social anthropology, which reached a high level around the time of World War II. Born in South Africa to poor Jewish immigrants from Russia, he studied hard and went to England in 1926, where he earned a doctorate in psychology from University College. He gradually developed an interest in anthropology through seminars by Malinowski and other scholars, which led to meticulous fieldwork in Ghana, Africa, from the 1930s to the 1940s.

イギリスの社会人類学者。第2次大戦をはさんで高い水準に達したイギリス社会人類学によるアフリカ研究の中で，エバンズ･プリチャードとならんで指導的役割を果たした。ロシアからの貧しいユダヤ人移民の子として南アフリカに生まれ，苦学の後，1926年イギリスに渡り，ユニバーシティ･カレッジで心理学の博士号を得た。その後マリノフスキーのセミナーなどを通じてしだいに人類学への関心を深め，30年代から40年代にかけてアフリカのガーナを中心とした綿密なフィールドワークを行うに至る。
