1906‐83 British social anthropologist. Along with Evans-Pritchard, he played a leading role in African studies in British social anthropology, which reached a high level around the time of World War II. Born in South Africa to poor Jewish immigrants from Russia, he studied hard and went to England in 1926, where he earned a doctorate in psychology from University College. He gradually developed an interest in anthropology through seminars by Malinowski and other scholars, which led to meticulous fieldwork in Ghana, Africa, from the 1930s to the 1940s.
