A rebellion against the rule of Persian King Darius I by Greek cities in Ionia, centered around Miletus. 499-494 BC. Aristagoras, the tyrant of Miletus, encouraged Darius to invade Naxos, but when this failed in 499 BC and he was at his wit's end, he received orders to rebel from his father-in-law Histiaeus in Susa and decided to rebel. To encourage the Miletians to join him, he abolished the tyranny and established an equal government, captured the tyrants of the other Ionian cities and handed them over to the people of their respective countries, and then traveled to the mainland to ask for aid.
